Before asking voters
The referendum isn't WWS's first move — it's not the only one either.
WWS has already taken steps to control costs. They help, but they don't close a structural gap this size on their own.
Leaner administration - Reduced three administrative positions through restructuring and reorganized central office responsibilities.
Staffing tied to enrollment - Staffing decisions are more closely tied to actual enrollment and class-size data; some positions have been delayed or left vacant.
Transportation cuts - Routing, staffing, and procedures reviewed for efficiency as fuel and bus costs have climbed (50% increase in some costs like buses and diesel fuel).
Schedule redesign - Starting 2027-28, Westfield High School moves from trimesters to semesters — expected to reduce staffing needs by about 10 teaching positions over time.
Standardized staffing models - Elementary schedules and staffing models standardized district-wide, with continued competitive bidding on contracts.
Cross-trained staff - Staff cross-trained across roles to reduce the need for additional hires as the district grows.
